On Friday, July 20th Clarence Seedorf - Dutch national, Surinamese born, AC Milan football player - was invited to the presidential palace in the Suriname capital of Paramaribo. In front of the entire Surinamese government, the 31-year old offensive midfielder was given the country’s highest civilian decoration and promoted to Commander of the Yellow Star Order.
President Venetiaan also asked Clarence in a private meeting the following day to act as an ambassador for the nation, not only as a sports figure, but in any way that could bring added value to benefit the country and its image throughout the world.
"Suriname is in my heart not only today, but forever. I will do my best to help the government and the people to work on a better future for the country and especially its youth because they are the future," beamed Seedorf, "I am very honored by this decoration " words can’t express my gratitude and appreciation. The friendship and love I feel when I am here is priceless."
