Dear Friends,

The Nelson Mandela Foundation and 46664, the campaign vehicle of the Mandela organisations, have called for an observance of former President Mandela’s birthday on 18 July as an annual international day of humanitarian action in order to celebrate his life and legacy.

Mandela Day is designed to harness the hope and inspiration that Mr Mandela has brought to the world by galvanising a global movement for good. This day should be characterised by local people taking charge of their own destinies and, at the same time, honouring Mr Mandela by doing good for others.

Mr Mandela has given 67 years of his life in service. On Mandela Day, the aim is for individuals to give at least 67 minutes of their time in service to their communities in whichever way they choose. Although the 67 minutes call is symbolic, people are urged to become involved in community service on an ongoing basis.

It is hoped that Mandela Day will be a catalyst for individuals and communities to emphasise the values of social cohesion, such as unity, reconciliation, and respect. Whatever activity is planned should promote dialogue and a sense of community.

Mandela Day is not a holiday but is intended to become an annual celebration of Mr Mandela’s life and a global call for people to recognise that they have the power to change the world around them. The ultimate aim is the creation of a continuous movement for good.

A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. Each person who responds to this call should decide for themselves what they would like to do, and then do it as a tribute to Mr Mandela.

We trust that you will be an active part of the celebrations and make an imprint.

Our President honored by Mandela

Clarence Seedorf , Founder and President of Champions for Children, on Friday 5th june 2009 met Nelson Mandela as he became the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s latest Legacy Champion.

"It’s a very special day. I am making sure that the memory of his work will be an inspiration to the next generation. To have been for some moments with Nelson Mandela. For my whole life I have been inspired by his life and work. It is an honour for me to have become a Legacy Champion," Seedorf said after the meeting in Johannesburg.

The award was given because of the charity work of his organisation, Champions for Children. The organisation is planing to open a Champions Playground at Mannenburg in Cape Town.

"I tried to explain to him where Surinam was. I thanked him for everything he has meant for me and everyone else in the world. I shook hands with him as much as possible," Clarence Seedorf said.

Earthquake in Abruzzo

From Padova a great act of solidarity

Santa Giustina in Colle (PD). Over 2000 children attended the gymnasium where Clarence Seedorf presented his Champions for Children Foundation. During the meeting of the 9th february 2009 he explained the importance of sport in the growth of an individual and how this could be even more important for those children who don’t have the same chances we have.
Many children in the world live in vulnerable areas; every day they have to face poverty, crime and marginalization. It is for them that all of us have to commit.
Clarence underlined the importance of sport to the children attended, explaining them about the Champions Playground which is the most important project of the Foundation where education through sport is its focus.
This project will start in South Africa within 2010 and a Playground will be built in Cape Town.
Thanks to this event and to the people who attended the meeting, the foundation raised up 23.000 Euro.
The event in Santa Giustina in Colle saw also the participation of the volley Champion Alberto Cisolla, who is one of the Ambassadors of Champions for Children.

Breathing new life into Suriname’s future

On Wednesday 2nd of July, Clarence went to the opening of the Neonatal Ward at the Academisch Ziekenhuis (Hospital), in the Surinamese capital, Paramaribo.

Champions for Children has donated the funds for new respiratory machines. Until now, the hospital had relied entirely on the 100 per cent oxygen flow technique, which is an imprecise and often dangerous method of care, which meant that the survival rate among prematurely born babies needing respiratory assistance was as low as 15 percent.

Clarence attended the opening with Suriname’s Minister of Public Health, Celsius Waterberg, before unveiling a plaque naming the ward after his grandfather, Freddy Seedorf.

Below is an extract from Clarence’s speech to those attending the opening:

A little over a year ago, a man, a doctor by the name of Dr. Amadu Juliana, came to my foundation with a dream. It was, and is, a dream that was simple to make come true…it would have been equally simple to crush it, by simply ignoring it.

But we have worked together to make it happen. The facts are clear – until today only 15 per cent of premature babies born in the hospital survived. Funds for the technology to prevent this were needed to provide sufficient and correct oxygen flow…in other words to guarantee life itself for newborns struggling with underdeveloped respiratory systems

That was last April. Now, here we are and the dream has become a reality. With this equipment and the know-how being made available to the hospital, survival rates will change dramatically. This ward will raise the survival rate to 80 per cent.

It may be my foundation that is behind this, but it is thanks to the caring doctors and policy makers, that the future for our little champions is getting brighter each day

I am proud that the ward has been named after my grandfather, Freddy Seedorf, because this was his dream too: a present and a future that promised every day to be a better day, that every day should be more full of hope, and where, together, we prove what we are able to make come true.

One of the doctors told me he hoped lot of little soccer players would be helped into life with the new machines. I told him that I hope a lot of little doctors would be too!
